Current issues effecting PS11

Overcrowding in District 2, and what it means for the future of PS11

PS11 parents and community members need to keep a watchful eye on how overcrowding across Distric 2 will impact our school. Though PS11 was not re-zoned THIS YEAR, there will most certainly be zoning changes next year. And as always, there is the possibility that what the DOE deems as non-central programs at PS11 (G&T and PreK, for example) could be discontinued in order to make room for zoned students and overflow from other schools.

It is important that anyone with a child born in 2007 (turning 5 by December 31, 2012) who is zoned for PS11 come to PS11 and fill out a Kindergarten Intake Form. This will give DOE a realistic look at our zoned numbers so that they can realistically look at which schools in District 2 have room for the expected overflow from Downtown Manhattan. So please be sure to encourage all friends and neighbors with zoned aspiring Kindergarteners to come in soon to complete their paperwork.

December 7th Town Hall meeting and final hearing update:
Town Hall meeting with Dennis Walcott at BREC last night was followed by the final zoning hearing. Not highly attended, and no surprises. This round of rezoning will NOT have any effect on the PS11/41/3 zones. Here are the DOEs final proposals which will be voted on at the Dec 14th CEC Meeting.

November 28th hearing update:
Current zone lines WILL NOT CHANGE as the CEC has unanimously rejected the below proposal for West Village/Chelsea put forward by the DOE. DOE has not submitted a counter proposal, so zone lines for PS11, PS41, PS3 will stay as they currently are.

The DOE presented revised and final rezoning proposals on Tuesday, November 7, 2011 for Upper East Side, Chelsea/West Village, and Downtown. The map below shows how PS11's zone would change. For more information, read Gotham Schools review of the plans.

Upcoming meetings:

• Wed, Dec 7, at 6 p.m, location to be announced —Town hall meeting with Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott

• Wed, De. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Lab, 333 W 17th St — CEC vote on the zoning proposals.

The CEC will vote on the proposals at their December 14, 2011 Calendar Meeting. Pending approval by the CEC (Community Education Council), the proposed changes would take effect for the 2012-13 academic year. If CEC votes against the proposed plans, zone lines will remain as they currently are. Public comment is encouraged and can be sent to the District 2 CEC at D2Proposals@gmail.com

NOTE TO CURRENT PS11 FAMILIES: The proposed changes would only impact incoming Kindergarten or new students to the system. All currently enrolled student may remain in their school through the terminal grade. Current in-zone siblings who would be zoned out based on the proposed lines will be grandfathered as an in-zone sibling.

Other current issues

• Elementary and Middle School Construction
PS11 continues to advocate for additional elementary and middle school school construction to meet the ever growing capacity needs within the district.

Most current focus is on the bottom six floors of the Foundling Hospital building at Sixth Ave. and 17th St. originally proposed to be developed as a new public elementary school opening Fall 2014. PS11 contends this school should be a zoned school to alleviate anticipated overcrowding at nearby PS11, PS41, PS40, PS3.
