Mentoring Programs
America Reads
America Reads is a nationwide program that seeks to have every child reading well and independently by the end of 3rd grade. New York University provides PS11 with undergraduate student volunteers who read one-on-one with our students through this program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
This school-based mentoring program provides selected students with a one-to-one relationship with an adult mentor. Through teacher referrals, students are given the opportunity to be matched to a mentor who will visit them for one hour, once a week, for the duration of the school year. Big Brothers Big Sisters has proven to increase the self-esteem, grades and school attendance of the children enrolled. Parents interested in finding out how this program works in our school should contact Madeline Alers, the school social worker, at 212-929-1743, ext.1010.
Learning Leaders
Learning Leaders help our students gain the educational skills and self-esteem they need to become successful learners. Each leader is assigned to a specific classroom and gives one-on-one assistance to children needing extra help in reading and math. Our Learning Leaders volunteers work under the supervision of the classroom teachers.
