What is the FLL and How Do PS11 Students Get Involved:

We're done with the 2011 - 2012 JrFLL League Snack Attack Challenge

This coming year we'll have a new challange: Senior Sollutions:
In early Fall, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project (pdf icon Why a Project in a Robotics CompetitionWhy a Project in a Robotics Competition?), and the FLL Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with one adult coach, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FLL Core Values. Teams may then choose to attend an official tournament, hosted by one of our Operational Partners.

Past Challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped population, and transportation. By designing our Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM principles that naturally come from participating in a robotics program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose.

Our PS11 Jr. LEGO Leaders will be creating a presentation with a LEGO model that includes working parts and robotics.
Our PS11 FLL LEGO Leaders Team will be creating a presentation with and programmed MindStorms robots that compete on a Senior Sollutions course.

If all goes according to plan, the teams will finish off with a Mega presentation/ competition /celebration at the New York Javits Center.

An Explanation of the PS11 LEGO EXPO Teams

Jr. FLL has captured the imagination and minds of thousands of kids. Each year, the Challenge Advisory Team designs a new and exciting Challenge to ignite the inherent creativity in young kids. The end result of the design process is a Challenge with two defined parts - the Show-Me Poster and the Model.

The Show-Me Poster requires kids to illustrate their research and team journey. It provides an opportunity for them to share what they studied, what they learned, and how they thought to improve the problem they chose. Their creative minds get started working on how to present their information and solution.
The Model portion of the Challenge gets kids’ hands busy. This is where they build a representation of what they are researching (according to the Challenge requirements), incorporating simple machines and movement into their creation. Teams are able to utilize a motor to power movement in their model, or they can move an element of it by hand.

The Jr. FLL Challenge is based on the same real-world topic as the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge. It is open-ended, designed for younger kids, and customizable for every ability level.

Time Commitment

Hi Families.

Please understand that if your child joins the PS11 LEGO LEADERS they must commit to a serious amount of hours. We will usually meet after school for a couple of hours and weekends are possible especially as we get close to any of the competitions.

Please email Mr. Fier for a further explanation.
